Private Message to Mr Ludovic Bagman and Professor Sinistra
Dear Mr Bagman,
I'm writing as part of the Young Protectors' League assignment. You may have seen Professor Sinistra's post about it. The third-year students are supposed to write to someone in a career they'd like to pursue after finishing school. I've been interested in Quidditch for a long time, and other sport as well. (Some of the older boys in Hufflepuff have a fantasy Quidditch league and I hope to help run it next year.) I used to want to be a player when I grew up, only since coming to school I've seen players like Diggory and Wood. I can tell what makes them such ace players, but I also know I'm not nearly as good as they are and I'm not like to get a spot on our House side at this point, let alone anything like good enough to play in the leagues. But I know that running sport takes a lot of work and that leagues don't organise themselves, so I think I might like to go into the Ministry to help regulate and oversee Quidditch and the like. And my father says that you were one of the best Beaters the Wasps ever had, and that you really know how to make sure that everyone plays fairly and within the rules, and that's why you're such a good choice to head the Department. So I reckon you're also the best choice for me to write so I can go to the YPL programme this summer.
I think what's most important to me about the YPL is that it pushes us all to think of new and better ways to celebrate the freedom we enjoy in the Protectorate. Before His Lordship took over, we would have to hide our Quidditch matches and hold them out on abandoned moors and the like. Nowadays, of course, we can build grand stadiums and we don't have to worry about keeping them secret. I wish we could participate fully in the International leagues but I suppose if other countries would be more sensible about their muggles, we could do that more easily. All the same, I think it's brilliant that we can use sport to unify all those of magical descent and to build morale among our people. Plus, we're always learning about the importance of fitness, so I think the Department of Magical Games and Sports is a really powerful force to help carry that message.
This summer, I hope to prove my own physical fitness in the exercises for the cadets. I think that learning field mediwizardry and survival skills might also be helpful in the case of injuries. And orienteering and mapping is necessary for choosing good places to build pitches, as well.
Well, I shan't take up any more of your time, except to say that I hope that you and Professor Sinistra find this letter acceptable.
Thank you very much.
Sincerely,
Zacharias Smith
